The Light and YOU.....

Here are 5 ways light can affect you:

1. Our moods.
Lighting greatly impacts our moods throughout the day. Natural lighting through windows has a very calming and peaceful effect on our moods and emotions; however lack of light and even poor artificial lighting can trigger depression. Our soothing brain chemical serotonin plummets on dark days, causing changes negative in mood and emotions, whereas daylight is proven to cause a spike in serotonin and induce happiness. Simply put on sunny days we tend to be more optimistic and even more helpful.

In a slump? Go outside for 15 minutes and feel your mood brighten!

2. Our productivity and concentration.
Places where our brains need to be stimulated the most such as schools and office buildings are always brightly lit. The most prevalent source of light in these locations is often fluorescent, due to cost and energy efficiency. However spending excessive time solely in harsh artificial light can cause you to start to feel nervous and uneasy. Occasionally libraries tend to use "warmer" bulbs to try to build a more comfortable reading environment.

To optimize a creative space, try dimming your lights a little, then adjust your lights to make them brighter when you need to focus!

3. Our sleep cycles.
In humans like most other animals our circadian rhythm, the built-in biological process that oscillates every 24 hours, is driven by exposure to daylight. Our sleep cycle is greatly dependent on our actions throughout the day. Studies show that exposure to brighter light in the late evenings cause a delay to this cycle and lead us to prefer a later and later sleep time. When our sleep patterns are disrupted we're more susceptible to many health ailments.

Keep your light dim in bedrooms because it has a drowsy affect and will prepare you for sleep. Be especially cautious of how late you're on your bright electronic devices. Dim the device, or switch on night reading mode, which reverses the lighting effect (white text on black page, rather than black text on white page).

4. Our eyes.
This fact, though seemingly obvious, is ignored by most. Light, both natural and artificial, can cause a great strain and even permanent damage on our eyes. We've all been told at least once not to stare at the sun, which is great advice considering permanent retinal damage can occur after just a few minutes! Bright artificial lighting can also cause damage, often resulting in a headache and tiredness after a long day in an unpleasantly lit space

.

Be aware of when your eyes start to strain indoors and adjust your lights. Don't forget to use sunglasses when you're outside of course!

5. Our decision making.
Studies suggest that emotions are experienced more intensely under bright lights. So, fictional detectives interrogating suspects under bright, harsh lighting, to get to the truth, may have really been on to something. So if you are buying emotional products, such as flowers or an engagement ring, check to see if the store has their light as bright as possible… Contrary wise, dimming the lights reduce emotionality in everyday decisions.

So when you are to "sleep on it", or "everything will look different in the harsh light of day" they may be on to something!

It's perhaps worrying that there are so many factors that can affect your health due to everyday lighting situations, yet it's exciting that we are starting to understand that there are ways to manipulate your lighting for the better.

We have many different types and kinds of lighting here at Yourplumberscrack. Come down and see us. We can meet all your light needs. 6877 Spencer Highway Sparta TN 38583. Tuesday through Saturday, 9 am until 5 pm.

How Light Affects Your Feelings....

Just as the colors of painted walls affect how you feel, so does the light that illuminates a room. Light therapy studies have found that different light colors affect moods, heart rates and circadian rhythms. By understanding the health effects of different light colors, you can design your home or office in a manner that promotes positivity and well being.

Color Considerations for Natural Light Therapy Solutions

Red Light
Throughout the last few decades, scientists repeatedly found that red light is the least likely to affect internal clocks. A 2013 Journal of Neuroscience report discussed the effects of red, blue and white lights on hamsters. At the conclusion of the respective study, researchers found that the rodents exposed to red light at night seemed less depressed than those exposed to the other colors of light. We have since found that this is because red light has a lesser effect on circadian rhythms, making it an excellent choice for evening lighting.

Similarly, a 2006 study published in Forschende Komplementärmedizin (Research in Complementary Medicine) found that different colors of light affect heart rate variability within minutes. In a 12-person study, those exposed to red and green lights, followed by a period of darkness, were the most likely to have higher levels of emotional arousal, which translate into better moods.

Blue and White Lights
In the study using hamsters, researchers found that the hamsters exposed to blue or white light experienced considerably more interruptions in their sleep patterns. This is because different light wavelengths affect how the brain reacts. Brain cells tend to be the most sensitive to blue wavelengths and the least sensitive to red ones.

In his article, Holzman stated that while many visible wavelengths have the power to reset circadian rhythms to a degree, blue light has the strongest impact—even in those who are blind. A study at the Harvard Medical School found that blue wavelengths suppressed melatonin levels at least twice as long as other light colors. Holzman highlighted other studies that discovered that blue light reduced sleepiness, elevated body temperatures, increase attentiveness and helped improve memory. Exposure to blue light in the early parts of the day can increase energy levels and reduce the after-lunch energy crash.

Lighting and Your Emotions: Can the color of lighting and the intensity of light affect you and your emotions???

Can the color of lighting and the intensity of light affect you and your emotions? According to several recent studies, yes it can. Let us explore this possibility....

The intensity of light could also have an impact on the intensity of our emotions, a new study suggests.

Research published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology shows that the more intense the lighting, the greater a person’s emotions — both positive and negative.

“Other evidence shows that on sunny days people are more optimistic about the stock market, report higher well-being and are more helpful while extended exposure to dark, gloomy days can result in seasonal effective disorder,” study researcher Alison Jing Xu, an assistant professor of management at the University of Toronto Scarborough, said in a statement. “Contrary to these results, we found that on sunny days depression-prone people actually become more depressed.”

The study included six experiments to examine the link between emotion and ambient brightness. For one experiment, researchers showed that feelings of warmth increased in response to bright light, even when the temperature of the room was kept the same.

In the other experiments, researchers put study participants under different lighting conditions as they rated various things, such as the attractiveness of someone, the spiciness of a sauce, and their feelings toward positive or negative words.

When the study participants were under the brighter lighting, their emotions were more intense: For instance, they wanted the spicier sauce, they thought the person was more attractive, and they thought the positive words were more “positive” and the negative words were more “negative.”

Researchers noted that the bright light’s ability to make people feel warmer could have something to do with increasing the intensity of their emotions.

“We suggest that these effects arise because light underlies perception of heat, and perception of heat can trigger the hot emotional system,” the study said. “Thus, turning down the light, effortless and unassuming as it may seem, can reduce emotionalism in everyday decisions, most of which take place under bright light.”

These are things that need to be kept in mind when choosing your home's lighting. We here at Yourplumberscrack.com have a home design expert with 20 years of real world experience to help you with important consideration such as these. Come see us today.. 6877 Spencer Hwy, Sparta TN 38583.

Your Bathroom: An Sensual Escape or a Practical Space

Today we are going to talk about bathrooms. A very important room in your home. Your bathroom should reflect you and your life style. When designing a bathroom keep in mind space, budget, and you. Your bathroom can be a sensual escape or a practical space depending on your personality and lifestyle. We are going to look at ideas for a sensual bath and a practical one as well.

First the sensual...

You don't have to spend a fortune to create a delicious, decadent bathroom that goes way beyond just bathing. Sometime life can just be too much and to help cope with it, you should take a bath. Ask yourself what your ideal bathroom would look like, if price were not an issue. Really think about what you want from your bathroom. The details can be very tantalizing. Think about it.....

The largest difference between the closet size bath and the empress-like opulence you may long for is Cost. A full bathroom remodel can cost between $3000 and $20,000 depending structural changes, finishing materials and fixtures. Now with some minor changes you can introduce color, texture and polish to make your bathroom a sensual space. The key to a sensual bathroom is to remember all your senses.

Introduce warmth into your bathroom. Towel warmers are an excellent way to bring heat into a bath. We at Yourplumberscrack have an excellent Jacuzzi EU49000 Panel Ready 42" towel warming drawer ready to be built into your bathroom wall. This is a 2 towel unit. We also have radiant heating bathtubs and several jetted models that are excellent for relaxing.

Maybe shape is what floats your boat. You can buy organically inspired fixtures that both pleasing to the eye and the purse. Yourplumberscrack features many faucets manufactured by Grohe, Hansgrohe, and Kohler. Perhaps you would like some romantic lighting in your bath? We carry various brands of damp rated lighting as well.

On to the practical.....A place for everything and everything in its place.

We are going to be looking at various bathroom layouts that will help make the most efficient use of your bathroom. Since the average bath is usually relegated to a relatively small amount of space, a proper layout is needed so that the location of features allow for ease and economy of movement. We are going to talk about tricks and tips that will make your small bathroom space appear bigger.

The Half Bath/Powder Room:

This is usually a small space (4"6"/5"x 4"6"/5" up to 6'/7' x 2'/3' depending on layout) equipped only with a toilet and a sink. Often called a "powder room" and located in the front entry way or another public area as powder rooms are for guest use and not typically for family use. Light tones and colors help give the appearance of space. Using large format tiles on the floor and walls can create a seamless visual effect. Small pieces of pottery designed specifically for corners further create an illusion of space. Floating vanities and toilets keep the line of tiles unbroken and that creates a perception of space. (You should always ensure that internal walls are sturdy enough to support the fittings you choose.)

The Three Quarter Bath:

The 3/4 bath consists of a toilet, a sink and a shower only. NO bathtub. Three quarter baths are considered by most people to be an ideal second bathroom. Avoid adding too many elements as this can cause visual clutter. A lighted in-shower shaving mirror is ideal in this space. Corner or pentangle shower enclosures will fit better in smaller spaces. Consider sliding/bi fold doors for your shower enclosure as to not obstruct the rest of the room. However if you have small children in the home then a bathroom without a tub is not ideal. So lets peek at a full bath.

The Full Bath:

The full bath consists of a sink, a toilet, and a shower/bathtub. It is most often located in a hallway so as to serve adjacent bedrooms and is large enough to accommodate a tub. If you have more than one of these bathrooms between bedroom consider a Jack & Jill bath without a hall entrance. Now to use the space effectively, take advantage of the space between wall studs by recessing a tall storage cabinet into the wall. This will maximize storage while saving on floor space. Invest in a quality toilet. (We have several models of toilets here at Yourplumberscrack that won't break your bank). Public opinion states that elongated bowls are the most comfy. Now on the the master bath...

The Master Bathroom:

This bathroom usually has a double sink vanity, a toilet (perhaps hidden in a tucked away partition), and shower/tub or if enough space is involved a separate soaking tub and shower stall. This bathroom typically part of the master suite and is intended for the private use of the bedroom occupants. Perhaps you don't want to worry over your wet/dry areas in the bath, then consider in floor drains for your shower (We have a lovely one). You can do a double vanity or separate vanities for more flexibility if room permits. Partitions can be used to define areas within this bath. (tuck that toilet away if you want). You may also want your closet area off your master bath this leaves the walls of your master suite for other things (art/television/built-ins, whatever makes you happy)
