Let's Talk Basic Metal Finishes!!!

     Today we are going to talk about different finishes for your faucets, shower trims, and bathroom accessories. There are many different finishes available. We will start with the basics...
   

     Chrome/Polished Chrome and Brushed Chrome. Two of these have that lovely mirror like quality that is so timeless. Brushed Chrome has a more muted appearance with the light brush strokes through the finish. All three of these finishes are beautiful and classy. Chrome is a finish that will never go out of style. It is also the least expensive finish, easy to find and match with other accessories. Chrome is also standard across brands (meaning it is the same for all brands). Every store carries the chrome finish.

      Let's talk nickel shall we. The nickel finish family includes: Brushed nickel, satin nickel and polished nickel. These are all excellent choices in finish whether for your bathroom/ powder room or in your high end kitchen. The finish is slightly darker in color than chrome and with the correct light can change shades. It is lovely finish comparable to chrome but with a more subtle appearance. Keep in mind that this finish tends to blend rather that stand out. Polished Nickel and Brushed Nickel are standards but satin nickel can vary by brand.

      Oil Rubbed Bronze a sexy, tanner finish. If you are looking for a finish that will give you a walk on the dark side, then Oil Rubbed Bronze is the finish for you. This finish has a chocolaty quality that boarders on the decadent. It is easy to find as right now it is a very popular finish. It gives an old world quality to your bathroom or kitchen. Oil rubbed bronze is easy to clean and doesn't show water spots. It may not however have the staying power of old reliable Chrome. It is NOT standard across brand either. If you are picky then you will need to stick to a brand in order for all your finishes to match exactly.

     Copper, the antibacterial choice, is not just for pipes anymore. Copper is a rich luscious choice in finish. Bear in mind that copper is a living finish and will change over time. As with any living finish, different things will change the finish. Hard water, humidity in the air, air content, and any substance you use in your sink (for example). As long as you don't mind a slight darkening with time then perhaps a rich, vibrant copper finish is for you.

      A look at the black and the white of it. Matte black or Flat Black is a relatively new finish out there. It is gaining in popularity. However, is is hard to find and more expensive than other time honored finishes. It is easy to clean and doesn't show finger prints. Black doesn't tend to show anything. A muted choice but a show piece none the less. Matte Black is a standard finish also. White is a clean, dazzling finish. It comes in plastic or porcelain. We have been using porcelain for years as material for the bathroom throne but maybe you haven't thought of washing your hands under it. It is a clean finish and super easy to clean but porcelain chips so easy. So keep that in mind. White is standard across the brand board as well.

Cleaning Your Shower Head the Easy Way- 2 Methods

Bag it up!

Bag It Up.

Your shower head is prone to buildup. This stuff is a pain to clean, if you do it the hard way (Read scrub brush and hours with your arms over your head.) You can cure your shower head of its grimy buildup with a bag or bowl of CLR Cleaner.
Method #1: Fill the bag, place it around the shower head so it's submerged in the liquid, and tie it to the neck with a twist tie, rubber band, hair tie, (you name it). Leave it  overnight and the cleaning will be handled for you. 

Head in a bowl.

Method #2: Unscrew the shower head (if you can and feel comfortable). You will need to unscrew a large rain head shower head as it is hard to fill a bag that big and get it up over head without make a mess.  Fill a large bowl with CLR and place the shower head in the bowl. Make sure the face is submerged. Leave it over night.  Que the drum roll, please.... Totally clean shower head.
